Why a multidisciplinary team is the key to innovation in your company

Innovation isn’t a strategic option. It’s a necessity. In a market that reinvents itself daily, stagnation is the beginning of the end. And yet, many still insist on seeing innovation as a privilege of specific departments usually throwing the responsibility on IT’s lap. The truth? That’s a costly mistake. Very costly.

In my journey leading Verzel and working alongside companies of all sizes and industries, one thing has become clear: real innovation is born where different types of knowledge meet. A multidisciplinary team is more than just a combination of skill sets it’s the spark that ignites transformative ideas. It’s what keeps your company from spinning in circles, stuck in its own habitual logic.

Homogeneous teams may feel comfortable, but they’re dangerously limited. When everyone thinks the same, no one is really thinking. This “lazy agreement” kills any chance of questioning and, with it, kills innovation too.

The Harvard Business Review’s study “How Diversity Can Drive Innovation” found that companies with diverse teams are 70% more likely to capture new markets. That’s no coincidence. Different perspectives create creative friction. And from that friction come the ideas that change the game.

In practice, a multidisciplinary team can attack problems from multiple angles simultaneously. I’ve seen this play out in dozens of projects here at Verzel: while the developer focuses on scalability, the designer improves user experience, and the business expert evaluates market impact. The result? More complete, efficient solutions with a holistic perspective.

And this isn’t just about agility. It’s about strategic intelligence. McKinsey & Company’s report “Delivering through Diversity” shows that companies with diverse teams are 33% more likely to outperform financially. Why? Because different experiences accelerate the identification of both risks and opportunities.

At Verzel, multidisciplinarity isn’t just a buzzword it’s our method. In a recent project, we brought together developers, UX experts, and marketing professionals to build a custom digital platform for a client. The result wasn’t just functional it was intuitive and appealing, with market adoption far above average. That kind of outcome is only possible when there’s cross-functional collaboration from day one.

And if you still need more proof, just look at the top players. Google, Apple, Amazon they all share one trait: they prioritize cross-functional collaboration. Their iconic products were born at the intersection of tech, design, business, and, above all, purpose.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned leading innovation projects, it’s this: no one innovates alone. You can’t expect a tech team, no matter how talented, to solve all your company’s challenges on its own. Innovation requires true collaboration, dialogue between different worlds, and an environment that values divergence.

Get in touch. Let’s build a solution that’s as diverse as it is efficient, because in today’s business world, thinking differently isn’t a luxury. It’s an urgency.
